Putting a human face on numbers: Making data speak
Together, we will take a look at different ways of how NGOs make use of data and how they interpret, internalize and contextualize data in order to better inform their work. During the afternoon, Aidsfonds will provide insight into their Open Data Platform Zoom, PAX will discuss their Human Security Survey, and we hope to learn more from Data Mission!

Eva Roos (Aidsfonds): Open Data Platform Zoom – using data visualizations to give numbers meaning
Data should ideally be easy to use and understand. The increased availability of data provides new opportunities to support sustainable development. Through combining and analyzing different data sources, new insights and knowledge could potentially be gained. With Zoom, Aidsfonds and its partners started to explore how to make smart use of available and relevant data for informed programming and decision making in the fight against Aids.
Marieke Meeske (PAX): The Human Security Survey – How data gathering at the local level can contribute to improved human security
Expanding the voice and agency of civilians on protection issues and security policies is key in making these more responsive to local needs, priorities, and capacities. PAX has developed a survey methodology (i.e. the Human Security Survey (HSS)), which includes a series of complementary activities for gathering civilian’s voices and leveraging opportunities for civilians to participate in security dialogues at the community level. PAX currently implements the HSS in South Sudan and Iraq. In her talk Marieke will explain the HSS process, and how data gathering at the local level can contribute to improved human security.
Renald Buter: Data Mission – Data and Digital Technology for Humanity
Data can seem like a clutter of numbers, but by visualising and analysing it, that data can become knowledge. We know analysts and other specialists who would like to volunteer and help organizations extract knowledge from their data.
